Growing Instructions Included
Choose the Right Location: Select a planting site that receives full sun to partial shade. Hollyhocks thrive in full sun but can tolerate some shade. Make sure the soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Hollyhocks prefer fertile, loamy soil.
Determine the Planting Time: Plant hollyhock seeds in the spring or early summer, after the last frost date for your region. You can also sow them in late summer for the following year's bloom.
Prepare the Soil: Work the soil to a depth of about 6 to 8 inches. Incorporate organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to enrich the soil.
Sow the Seeds: Hollyhock seeds are relatively large and can be sown directly into the garden bed. Plant the seeds at a depth of about 1/4 inch. Space them at least 18 inches apart to allow for their eventual growth.
Watering: Water the planted area gently but thoroughly after sowing for good soil contact around the seeds. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Germination and Thinning: Hollyhock seeds typically germinate within 10-14 days. Once the seedlings are a few inches tall, thin them to the desired spacing, leaving the strongest and healthiest plants.
Provide Support: Hollyhocks can grow quite tall and may need support structures especially in windy conditions. Stake or use plant supports as needed.
Care and Maintenance: Continue to water the hollyhocks regularly, especially during dry seasons. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to help with healthy growth. Take away spent flowers to help with continuous blooming.
